How does one artfully show the proportions of an item, without using a ruler?
(I'll admit to having done that...)
I won't try on and model all of the earrings for two reasons.
- I don't want to be icky, so I would have to switch out the hooks on every pair after trying them on and that would be too much
- I would have to do my hair and makeup for the pictures....and that is too much on most days too :-)
So, do you have any ideas? I thought about getting a mannequin head, but I haven't found anything in my price range that would do without being weird. I've held them in my hands in some shots, done the ruler thing, running out of ideas.
Any thoughts?

Hang one or more pairs on spooky branch (painted black) for Halloween-themed items...
Use beautiful, old picture frames "upcycled" with cork or perhaps velvet in the photo area...
Use a real or silk flower next to the earrings, because flowers are always eye-catching...
These are just a few ideas off the top of my head.
Hope it helps to get your ideas flowing. :-)
Put something else pretty in the shot that people know the general size of, like a nice china teacup, or a flower. It could even be an artificial flower, as long as it's the same size as a real one. Look around for other common household objects that could work. Or hold the item in your hand.
You might try and putting a coin beside the item. Everyone knows how big a US penny is.
Also, from an artistic perspective, try not to hang the earrings both at the same level. Show one higher than the other - looks better.
Maybe...
you could find an old men's shirt collar (they used to detach) with cuff links. I know, I know...wrong gender. But, could be effective in presentation. A white collar, silver cuff links and your beautiful colored earrings....contrast.
just a thought

Perhaps a vintage-style pair of high heeled shoes?
A lot of good ideas have been given. Keep it simple; don't detract from your items. I like the teacup idea…and the branch…which could be painted white for different colored ear rings; and autumnal colors.
Take a small screen, set it in a white, painted frame that you've made some ruler markings upon; and, hang the ear rings, staggered for presentation.
just another idea to consider…

Following on from IsDihara's Halloween idea... if you ever do any seasonal-themed jewelry, put appropriate props in the background. A small gourd or two or an arrangement of leaves for fall, ornaments or holly leaves for Christmas, colored eggs or a stuffed bunny for Easter, flowers and green leaves for spring and summer, you get the idea.
Another idea for a nice "any time" backdrop would be a smallish book/ journal with a pretty cover. A votive candle would also be pretty. I like the shoes idea, too.
